ARC PROGRAM A RESOUNDING SUCCESS!  “Artists, Instructor, & ARC Staff at Exhibition/Reception” (group shot) Ulster-Greene County ARC, located at Bridge Street in Catskill, was the scene of a colorful collaboration for a very special part of our community. Back in the summer of 2005 staff members Gail Campbell and Donna Miller began initial planning for a series of visual arts classes targeted at adults. With the support of DEC funds Ulster-Greene ARC annually offers high quality programming to provide individuals with developmental disabilities and others equal opportunities for artistic exploration & expression and the 2006 classes were no exception. The idea for a visual arts class originated with members of the ARC community and Campbell was able to recruit a talented local artist to meet the challenge. Early this spring instructor Angela Gaffney-Smith began meeting weekly with 16 eager apprentices, introducing them to painting in the Impressionist style, portraiture in clay, & collage work. Gaffney-Smith is an exhibiting artist in her own right, offering private instruction in drawing, composition, watercolor & pastel out of her Saugerties studio.  Instructor Angie Gaffney-Smith & young guest After weeks of hard work the budding artists were ready to share their achievements with an appreciative public. In an effort to raise awareness of the value of such a program and garner recognition for the participants, an exhibition and opening reception was arranged for April 22 at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Cairo. Walls & tables were filled with art and the community room transformed into a gallery. A sense of accomplishment pervaded the gathering as the artists worked the room like polished professionals, gave speeches, explained their artistic decisions and posed with their work for proud friends and family. Judging by the multitude of smiles in the room, Gaffney-Smith’s teaching philosophy that “the creation of artwork be a joyful experience” met with a warm and enthusiastic reception. |
